The Department of Psychological Science at MCC requires that all students who take PSY 230 must also be enrolled in one credit of PSY 231 with the same instructor, concurrently. The laboratory for statistics will focus largely on reinforcing statistical concepts through computer applications and project-based work. General Course Objectives
- Instructional Manual: Almost every time that we meet for lab, we will be using the instructional manual, in some form. We will also use the manual as a supplement for lecture and other activities. Failure to bring your manual to lab may result in a lab attendance penalty. If you misplace your manual, you can access it on this page, in the Downloads section.
- eBook: Okay. Here is where it gets a little interesting. In my infinite wisdom/stupidity, I decided that I would create an online book for the class. That way, you always have access and you don’t have to pay $160+ for a stats book.
- Scientific Calculator: Please bring (or invest in, if you do not currently have one) a hand calculator for doing your lab assignments. You do not need to have an overly fancy calculator (i.e., TI-86); a simple scientific one (about $15 at the bookstore) will work fine. You are required to bring your calculator to lab each day. While you may use a mobile device to perform calculations in class and lab, you will NOT be allowed to use a mobile device for the exams.
- Data Storage Solution: Since you will be doing extensive statistics work in the computer lab, you will probably need to obtain USB flash drive on which to store your data files. You may also save your files to the “cloud.” I'm partial to DropBox and Google Drive. You will not be able to save files on lab computers. You are required to bring your storage device to lab each day. You are required to have a storage solution by the third lab. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a lab attendance penalty.

Lab activities focus on learning basic user skills in the Statistics Package for The Social Sciences (SPSS), team-based activities, tutoring, and the application of concepts covered during the lecture portion (PSY 230) of the introductory statistics experience. Full details are listed in the Instructional Manual.
- PIRC Lab Tutoring Center (MCC @ Southern & Dobson)
The Psychological Science Department maintains it's own tutoring center within the Psychology Instructional Resource Center (PIRC). Tutoring focuses primarily on Introduction to Statistics, Research Methods, and Introductory Psychology. The PIRC is located in Building AD 42. Check with the PIRC to get the most current tutoring schecule.
- Learning Enhancement Center (MCC @ Red Mountain)
Many students find that college coursework provides new academic challenges. Students who wish to deepen their understanding of course concepts, extend their skills, and improve their performance in their course(s) are encouraged to use the free tutoring and other support services in the Learning Enhancement Center. The LEC is located on the 1st floor of the Desert Willow Building.
- Writing Center (MCC @ Southern & Dobson)
The Writing Center provides one-on-one appointments to help students during any phase of the writing process: brainstorming, prewriting, researching, drafting, and revising. The Writing Center is located on the 1st floor of the Elsner Library.
